What to expect during your first appointment with Carleen Sanchez Hair Color or Olaplex DryCut Experience:

– Discuss problems and solutions for your hair

– A custom color is formulated in front of you at our color bar

– We give you a styling lesson, AKA “Boot Camp” or “Curl Coaching,” so YOU can duplicate the style at home.

– Take-home curlscription sheet, customized and tailored for your unique curl type

Custom Dry Curly Haircut vs Traditional Wet Cut

How does my custom dry curly haircut differ from a traditional wet cut when styling curly hair?

In beauty school we are taught to cut all hair the same.

Straight or curly, we are taught to use combs and to cut the hair when its wet, sometimes using thinning shears (GASP).

This stretches the curl pattern and usually results in the dreaded triangle haircut and FRIZZ!

Your hair is often the first thing people notice about you and can make a great day bad or a bad day great.

You should go to a curl specialist that has pictures of their work in a portfolio you can see to make sure you are in the right hands.

I do not use any combs when cutting curly or wavy hair.

I will cut your hair in its naturally curly state while it is dry.

Your curls are unique to YOU! Each curl type has its own “Spring factor” when stretched.This is also referred to as “Shrinkage”. This is why a custom dry curly haircut is so important.

Wet haircuts elongates the curl and gives a false reading.

When your curls dry from a wet haircut, 99% of the time the result is a uneven haircut that you hate.This is why so many curly girls and guys are scared of haircuts.

5 tips for the Perfect Hair Consultation

Although you may think all hairstylists have Miss Cleo Psychic skills, I can assure you most of us do not.  My idea of copper and caramel are highly likely to be completely different than yours. My idea of a major change might be much more progressive than your idea. I do however want to make all of your hair fantasies come true. So lets get some ground rules set for a perfect hair consultation and ultimately the best hair of your life.

  1. Do communicate with me by texting pictures of color and cuts you are lusting after. The sooner the better. If you see a picture of a beautiful color or cut you want to talk with me about on your next visit just text it to me right then. The photo will then be in our communication history and easy to pull up. I love photos sent a minimum of 24 hours in advance so I can think about you and do my homework before you even step foot in the salon.
  2. When I ask you if you have had your hair colored or any chemical treatments on it I really need the honest answer. I do not want your hair to break off or turn Blahorange. 100% chance that your hair will reveal its history and it can save you loads of frustration, money and damaged hair to be honest upfront. That color/relaxer/perm you did two years ago is still in your long mermaid hair unless it was cut off.
  3. Please come to your appointment with clean and detangled, dry hair in the best style you could do. I want to see what your skill level is in taking care of your hair so I can then formulate an education styling lesson to bridge the gap between what style you want and what you know now. I wont be there every morning to caress your beautiful locks into the style you crave,  so I need to make sure I empower you and fill your brain and hands with the right styling knowledge and tools. These are some of my favorite Curly Girl approved products.
  4. Please turn off or silent your cell phone during our consultation in salon. I need your full attention and communication while we converse about your hair and your hair issues. The consultation is the most important time and the conversation should really be about you and your hair. Save the chit chat for later.
  5. Please do not bring children or extra people or pets (service animals welcome) to your appointment. The extra people/kids/pets are distracting to me, the hairstylist, and makes it hard to focus on you, the superstar.

You will then embark on a HANDS ON styling lesson, which will provide you with a custom “curlscription” and a curly hair lesson targeted at your unique curls’ needs.

What Kind of Goddess is Hiding Under the Frizz?

I uncovered a curly hair goddess today!

A true blue mermaid with flowing long beach wave and curly hair. The kind of hair that has you whistling “The girl from ipanema” or songs from “The little mermaid”.

When my new guest came in I could see she was fearful, like so many curly girls are, when they go to a new hairstylist. Her hair was in one of the longest and thickest triangle shapes I have ever had the pleasure to sculpt my haircut into. In case you do not know, Triangles are the last shape that 99% of the curly population wants to sport as a hairstyle. I was overjoyed to be able to give her soft and flowing layers that work with her unique curl type.

Curly girls have a history of being brushed and combed and made fun of in the average salon by uneducated hairstylists who do not see curly hair for the gift that it is. I created and built the first salon in Northern Nevada in the city of Reno that caters to wavy and curly hair types so they will have a safe haven to let that hair down.
